IAHN GDE PUDJA MATARAM HOLDS INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM TO PROMOTE ECO-THEOLOGY AND ANIMAL WELFARE

The Postgraduate Program of Institut Agama Hindu Negeri (IAHN) Gde Pudja Mataram, particularly the Master’s Program in Hindu Communication Studies, organized an international-scale Community Service Program (PKM) at the Dharma Laksana Foundation Hall in Mataram City on Sunday (November 30, 2025).

Held in collaboration with the Dhyan Foundation India, the event gathered students, Hindu community organizations, and the general public. Keynote speakers included Ida Padanda Gede Oka Keniten and Mahima Jaini from the Dhyan Foundation.

As an organization known globally for its humanitarian efforts, Dhyan Foundation has long been dedicated to animal protection, ethical treatment of livestock, and the preservation of Vedic knowledge. The foundation operates numerous shelters, rehabilitation centers, and outreach programs across India, rescuing animals from abuse, trafficking, and neglect. Their initiatives support the ancient principle of ahimsa (non-violence), highlighting the integral connection between spiritual practice, ecological awareness, and compassion toward all living beings. This collaboration underscores the alignment between the Foundation’s mission and the eco-theological values promoted by IAHN Gde Pudja.

With the theme “Strengthening Eco-theological Awareness Regarding the Protection and Welfare of Sacrificial Animals for Hindu Religious Rituals,” the Graduate Program emphasized that ethical treatment of animals is essential for maintaining natural harmony.

Prof. Dr. I Wayan Ardhi Wirawan, Director of the Graduate Program, explained that both speakers discussed the importance of ethical conduct toward animals.

“In the Nusantara tradition, animal offerings are part of efforts to harmonize the natural world. One of these is through caru, which builds harmony between humans and nature,” he said.

He also highlighted Mahima Jaini’s presentation, which focused on practical guidance for caring for and protecting animals.

“By providing proper treatment and ensuring their welfare, the animals become healthier. This leads to better-quality offerings for caru, which helps strengthen natural harmony,” Ardhi explained.

Ardhi noted that the PKM is directly relevant to the field of Hindu Communication Studies, especially in understanding non-verbal communication and ethical interactions with living beings. Through this initiative, IAHN Gde Pudja Mataram continues to implement the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, particularly community service.

He added that the activity is expected to strengthen ties between the university and local communities. “We hope the public can understand these values and apply them in their daily lives,” he said.

Dr. Ni Luh Sinar Ayu Ratna Dewi, S.S., M.Ag., Head of the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), emphasized that the chosen theme reminds us of the sacred relationship between humans and nature. In Hindu tradition, animals are not merely living beings but part of Tri Hita Karana, the three principles of harmony.

“The partnership with Dhyan Foundation—an institution globally recognized for its work in animal protection, spiritual education, and humanitarian service—brings new momentum to the development of Hindu communication, religion, and ecology at our university,” she stated.

Meanwhile, Rector of IAHN Gde Pudja Mataram, Prof. Dr. I Wayan Wirata, A.Ma., S.E., M.Si., M.Pd., expressed his appreciation for the successful organization of this international program. He affirmed that such collaborative initiatives are essential for improving the university’s academic standing and global engagement.

He added, “We aim to build broader networks, not only with India but also with Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, the United States, Russia, and other countries to continuously enhance the quality of our academic and community service programs.”

The PKM concluded with presentations by the speakers and an interactive discussion session, marking another milestone in strengthening global partnerships and promoting eco-theological awareness through academic outreach. (by. DKS)
